“We weren’t aware that smoke alarms often don’t work correctly after 10 years. With the new alarms installed, I know that my mother is protected, and that gives me peace of mind.” https://lnkd.in/eF5pXRuF

More photos by #RedCrossNCGC volunteer Laura Isabel Ramírez Salazar: https://lnkd.in/eMdjfSuP ➡️ We do this once a month throughout the #RedCrossNCGC region. Local #RedCrossNCGC volunteers are among the hundreds of Red Crossers who are supporting Texans displaced by extreme flooding and residents affected by heartbreaking tornadoes in Oklahoma, Tennessee, North Carolina and other states. The American Red Cross now responds to nearly twice as many large-scale disasters as it did a decade ago and continues to adapt its disaster response strategy as the climate crisis brings more intense and frequent weather events. ❤️ To help support people affected by disasters like tornadoes, flooding and countless other crises, considering joining us as a volunteer or making a donation to support Red Cross Disaster Relief. “As a nurse, people often just feel comfortable talking, venting – telling me their story, their frustrations. I provided a lot of listening and help to get their frustrations out.” Barbara Freimuth, a registered nurse from Bethany Beach, Delaware, said the above quote while deployed to Florida recently to help people displaced by Hurricane Idalia. This #NursesWeek, we thank and recognize Barbara and the many nurses who volunteer with the Red Cross Health Services team for their dedication and caring, compassionate service. https://rdcrss.org/4dwbjd6 #NursesMakeTheDifference #NationalNursesWeek #ThankYouNurses #NursesWeek2024 #RedCrossNurses

#RedCrossNCGC volunteer Elizabeth Blakeley gets a lick of appreciation from a furry friend she helped reunite with its owner after flooding overtook their Texas neighborhood. The dog was rescued by a neighbor who waded through waist-deep water to reach him, and floated this little guy and his own dog to safety in an upturned refrigerator. Blakely, of Cecil County, Maryland, is one of 100+ trained Red Cross disaster relief workers who are on the ground in Southeastern Texas to help residents displaced by extreme flooding. Blakely says that many of the residents she's supported while working in Red Cross shelters in the Houston area over the past week have lost everything. Despite their heartbreak, she's also seen incredible resiliency. She's seen a lot of tears -- as well as smiles, she says., "I've seen that in times of need during disaster, people pull together as a community and they help each other," said Blakeley. "People [in Red Cross shelters] have been so friendly. There is sadness, it's very emotional, but they are troopers. They've been through so much but they are coping. Even though they’ve lost everything, they’re smiling and pulling together as a community -- truly amazing." It remains a dangerous situation in Texas even as floodwaters begin to recede. The Red Cross will continue to support residents in the days and weeks ahead to provide recovery resources and help get everyone back on their feet. In addition to Texas, Red Cross disaster response workers are on the ground in Nebraska, Iowa and Oklahoma to help residents affected by devastating tornadoes.
